Indigenising University Mathematics

Language and Oral Traditions

"Language and Oral Traditions" is led by Rowena Ball and Dan Collins. There are layers to this theme. They include ways in which language usage can be exclusionary, as well as a source of insight and inclusion.

Rowena Ball is of Aboriginal and Irish descent. She is a research Mathematician at ANU and is active in researching Indigenous Science and Mathematics and in STEM outreach with Indigenous students at remote schools and on-campus Summer Schools. She was honoured to deliver the inaugural Mandawuy Yunupingu Lecture at the Australian Mathematical Society conference in 2020. Watch it here.

Dan Collins of the Worimi/Biripi nation is the Yapug Program Convenor at the University of Newcastle.
